What has 50 years of voting Democrat brought your community besides ruin? I ask you to make a different choice in November 2018.
In November 2018, you will have a choice to make in the voting booth. In Florida’s House District 19, encompassing Bradford, Union, Putnam, and southern Clay County, you will see my name as the Libertarian Party of Florida (LPF) candidate. You will also see a Republican. You may see a Democrat, who would receive 85-90% of your vote, according to the last half century of statistics.
This election is coincidentally the year of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, and I ask for you to make an honest consideration of what the alliance with Democrats has produced, and to consider making a different choice. The facts indicate you have everything to gain, and nothing to lose. You likely will not even have a Democrat choice, and I will be happy to earn your vote even if just as opposition to the Republicans, who have betrayed all Americans as much as the Democrats.
I wanted to keep this letter short and sweet, so I will ask you to ponder a saying you have probably heard from the pulpit on Sunday most of your life. “You shall know a tree by its fruit”. Regardless of all the theories that people offer to explain various social and economic hardships in your community, I would like you to just look at the facts.
In every census from 1890 to 1954, blacks were either just as active or more so than whites in the labor market. During that earlier period, black teen unemployment was roughly equal to or less than white teen unemployment. As early as 1900, the duration of black unemployment was 15 percent shorter than that of whites. Today it’s about 30 percent longer. Would anyone suggest that during earlier periods, there was less racial discrimination?
When I hear a Democrat selling Affirmative Action, I hear a white supremacist saying that you are not as capable, and need a handicap, and I don’t buy it. You did far better in far worse times.
Between 1950 and 1965, the proportion of people whose earnings put them below the poverty level had decreased by more than 30%. The black poverty rate in particular had been cut nearly in half between 1940 and 1960. And in various skilled trades during the period of 1936-59, the incomes of blacks relative to those of whites had more than doubled.
In the mid-1960s, the out-of-wedlock birth rate was scarcely 3% for whites, 7.7% for Americans overall, and 24.5% among blacks. By 1976, those figures had risen to nearly 10% for whites, 24.7% for Americans as a whole, and 50.3% for blacks specifically. And today, the numbers stand at 29% for whites, 41% for the nation overall, and 73% for blacks. In other words, the entire country is moving rapidly in the wrong direction, but blacks in particular have reached a point of veritable catastrophe.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Nothing is so much needed as a secure family life for a people to pull themselves out of poverty.”
According to the National Fatherhood Initiative, 60% of rapists, 72% of adolescent murderers, and 70% of long-term prison inmates are men who grew up in fatherless homes. With regard to girls in particular, those raised by single mothers are more than twice as likely to give birth out-of-wedlock, thereby perpetuating the cycle of poverty for yet another generation.
Post-Civil War studies revealed that most black couples in their forties had been together for at least twenty years. In southern urban areas around 1880, nearly three-fourths of black households were husband- or father-present; in southern rural settings, the figure approached 86%. As of 1940, the illegitimacy rate among blacks nationwide was approximately 15%—scarcely one-fifth of the current figure. As late as 1950, black women were more likely to be married than white women, and only 9% of black families with children were headed by a single parent.
As George Mason University professor Walter E. Williams puts it: “The welfare state has done to black Americans what slavery couldn’t do, what Jim Crow couldn’t do, what the harshest racism couldn’t do. And that is to destroy the black family.” Hoover Institution Fellow Thomas Sowell concurs: “The black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and discrimination, began rapidly disintegrating in the liberal welfare state that subsidized unwed pregnancy and changed welfare from an emergency rescue to a way of life.”
The Democratic Party has perpetrated a literal holocaust on your community by promoting abortion on demand. Margaret Sanger, who created the policy, was quite open about her intentions. 15.5 million black babies have been murdered by the Democrat policies since 1973. I oppose these murderous and racist eugenics programs.
“We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population,” Sanger wrote. —Letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble on Dec., 10, 1939
When you look at the fruit born of the Democratic tree, there is nothing to see but poison fruit. In fact, the idea I must appeal to you as a group is a sad legacy of the identity politics played by the Democrats. About half of you are Conservative, and half are Liberal, how did you become segregated into a Democrat voting block anyways?
The Libertarian Party does not see you as “Black Americans”. We see you as “Americans”. We do not promote policies designed to lift up one group over another, which perpetuate racism and hate in society. We promote defending the rights of the smallest minority there is – the individual. I truly believe that if you help us become a major challenger to the status quo, you can see a new day of wealth and freedom in your community.
– I authored a body camera bill that will reduce use of force by 50%, and prevent unjust arrests across Florida. We want to end prisons for profit, and the incarceration industry, which disproportionately harms the black community.
– The Libertarian Party wants to decriminalize drugs and treat the addicts, rather than put them in cages. This will reduce drug use overall by half, and also lower crime and end the days of militarized police. We want to pardon all non-violent drug offenders so the mistakes of the past do not ruin a life.
– We want to restore economic vibrancy to the community by eliminating government obstacles to prosperity, and any racist laws that persist to this day.
– We want to end the unjust wars so many of your community have been sent to fight and die in.
– We want to end gun control laws, also rooted in racism.
– Our ultimate guiding principle is empowering YOU – the individual.
At the end of the day, regardless of the promises made by Democrats, they have ruined your community in the 50 years you gave them. Cut down this poison tree, and plant the tree of liberty among your people. Start in the ballot box next November.
